James Ivory directed this 1993 drama about a head butler working in post-World War I Britain who struggles to maintain his emotional distance and professional composure. Anthony Hopkins plays the reserved butler, while Emma Thompson portrays a spirited housekeeper whose presence challenges his carefully constructed walls. As his employer’s allegiances shift toward Nazi sympathies, the butler faces a crisis of conscience that forces him to confront what loyalty truly means. The film also features Christopher Reeve, Hugh Grant, and James Fox in supporting roles.
