Michael Nyman composed the original score for Jane Campion’s 1993 film The Piano, a work that brought him widespread recognition. The movie explores themes of colonialism and silence, centering on a character played by Holly Hunter who cannot speak. Nyman’s composition draws from his decades-long career blending classical music with jazz, avant-garde, and ambient influences, creating a foundation rooted in minimalist principles. The Munich Philharmonic Orchestra and horn players perform his stately, hymn-like motifs throughout the score.

This CD features Nyman’s complete soundtrack, with notable tracks including “To The Edge Of The Earth,” “The Heart Asks Pleasure First,” “The Promise,” and “The Scent Of Love.” The orchestrated pieces balance minimalist restraint with emotional depth, while the most striking moments showcase Nyman performing solo piano, playing the simple, period-style pieces associated with Hunter’s character. Add this hand-inspected soundtrack to your collection at a fraction of the original retail cost.
