Hank Penny & His California Cowhands recorded these Western Swing standards in the early years of Penny’s career, showcasing both his vocal talents and the musicianship of his band, which featured steel guitarist Noel Boggs. The material ranges from upbeat novelty numbers like “I Want My Rib” to genuine swing instrumentals and heartfelt ballads that helped define country music as a genre. Penny’s repertoire demonstrates how comedy and musicianship worked hand in hand in his performances, a balance that would define much of his career as both entertainer and recording artist.

This 2000 remastered CD from Jasmine Music contains one disc with tracks including “Alabama Jubilee,” “Flamin’ Mamie,” “The Penny Opus #1,” “Crazy Rhythm,” and “Wang Wang Blues,” among others. The original recordings have been restored for modern listening while preserving the character of Penny’s early work. Own a piece of Western Swing history with this used copy from our collection.
