Stephen Poliakoff wrote and directed this 2003 BBC drama about Prince John, the youngest son of King George V and Queen Mary. Born into the British royal family during the early twentieth century, John suffered from epilepsy and developmental differences that led his parents to keep him largely isolated from public life. The film follows his formative years through World War I, presenting his perspective on the great historical events unfolding around his family while exploring themes of disability, belonging, and what it meant to be different in that era. Bill Nighy, Michael Gambon, and Gina McKee anchor a carefully assembled cast.
