The King of Masks is a 1995 Chinese drama written by Minglun Wei and Wengui Chen. Set in 1930s Sichuan Province, the film follows an aging street performer who is the last master of Change Art, a traditional form of lightning-quick mask performance. Grieving the loss of his son, he becomes determined to find a male heir to carry on his dying art form before it vanishes forever. When a famous female impersonator offers him a place in an opera troupe, he refuses, unwilling to accept such an unconventional student. Instead, he purchases an orphan boy from the black market, believing he has found his perfect successor, only to discover a secret that will shatter his world and force both of them to confront the prejudices that bind them.
