Director Jan de Bont’s 1999 adaptation of Shirley Jackson’s psychological horror novel brings the story of Hill House to the screen with a focus on visual spectacle. Three subjects arrive at an isolated mansion under the pretense of participating in a sleep study, only to find themselves caught in the grip of supernatural forces. Lili Taylor, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Liam Neeson star in this tale where the house itself becomes a character, harboring dark secrets and malevolent presences that threaten to consume those within its walls.
