The Great Debaters is a 2007 drama inspired by the true story of Wiley College’s debate team during the early 1930s. Directed by Denzel Washington, the film follows Professor Melvin B. Tolson as he coaches a group of African-American students to compete against Harvard’s prestigious debate squad. Set against the Jim Crow South, the story explores how these underdogs discover that knowledge and eloquence can be their most powerful weapons in a time when the odds are stacked against them.
