The Golden Pomegranate

Movie / Show Details

Dan Turgeman directs this 2010 Israeli drama about Noa, a celebrated singer with Yemenite heritage who lives in Jerusalem. When an elderly Arab man approaches her before a concert, he shares the remarkable story of Mazal, her great-grandmother, a Jewish child-bride from Yemen. Through his account, Noa learns how Mazal survived the violent upheaval of Jerusalem and the Holy Land across several decades, from the late 1800s through the mid-20th century. Working as a skilled jeweler in gold and silver, Mazal became a widow and sole provider for her family while steadfastly preserving her cultural identity, religious faith, and artistic traditions in the Old City.
