Director Djibril Diop Mambety presents two Senegalese stories from 1999. “The Franc” follows a resourceful musician without money who purchases a lottery ticket and attaches it to his back door, then embarks on an unpredictable journey through his neighborhood after the ticket wins, all while carrying the door with him. “The Little Girl Who Sold the Sun” centers on Sili, a young girl with a physical disability who works as a beggar in Dakar. After being knocked down by children selling newspapers, she resolves to pursue independence by becoming a newspaper vendor herself, defying the resistance from those around her and challenging what has traditionally been a boy’s work.

This single DVD contains both films with a combined runtime of 45 minutes, presented in French audio with English, French, and Spanish subtitle options. Distributed by California Newsreel and not rated, the disc is PAL/Region 0 format, which requires a multi-region or PAL-compatible player for viewing in North America. Grab this used copy and own these compelling tales of determination and resilience.
