In 140 AD, Roman centurion Marcus Aquila accepts a posting in occupied Britain, driven by a personal mission to recover a lost military standard-a golden eagle-that his father failed to retrieve during an expedition into Scotland. To restore his family’s honor, Aquila ventures beyond Hadrian’s Wall into hostile native territory alongside Esca, a slave whose loyalty he grows to question as he learns more about the man’s past. Director Kevin MacDonald brings documentary-style attention to period detail, crafting an action-adventure that emphasizes the raw, brutal realities of the era alongside its epic scope.

This single-disc DVD release runs 94 minutes and carries a PG-13 rating from Focus Features. Channing Tatum leads the cast as Aquila, with support from Jamie Bell as Esca and Denis O’Hare among the ensemble. The film loses some momentum in its final act, but offers compelling character dynamics and visceral storytelling for viewers drawn to historical adventure.
