The Days of Awe: Meditations for Selichot, Rosh Hashanah, and Yom Kippur

CD Details

David Chevan’s 1995 debut album as a bandleader presents instrumental interpretations of music traditionally performed during the Jewish High Holy Days of Selichot, Rosh Hashanah, and Yom Kippur. Working with his ensemble the Afro-Semitic Experience and collaborators including trumpeter Frank London of the Klezmatics, Chevan draws from the cantorial singing tradition of Yoselle Rosenblatt, one of the most celebrated cantors in Jewish history. The album blends jazz, blues, funk, and world music influences to reimagine these sacred melodies for modern instrumental performance, creating a groundbreaking fusion of spiritual tradition and contemporary improvisation.

This CD features the full album with a runtime of approximately 50 minutes, released on the World Village label. Standout tracks include “Sente / He’s An On Time God,” “Forgive Us (S’lakh Lawnu),” and the extended arrangement “A Song For When The Temple Is Rebuilt (Sheyiboneh Beis Hamikdash).” Acquire this used copy and own a piece of innovative Jewish-American music history.
