Director Peter Horton’s 1995 drama follows Erik, a solitary boy who forms an unlikely friendship with Dexter, an eleven-year-old newcomer to their riverside town who has AIDS. When the community shuns Dexter and his mother, Erik reaches out, and the two boys soon discover a tabloid story about a doctor in New Orleans claiming to have found a cure. Determined to find him, they construct a raft and journey down the Mississippi River in a summer adventure that becomes as much about friendship and acceptance as it is about their quest, ultimately transforming both of their lives. The film stars Joseph Mazzello and Brad Renfro alongside Annabella Sciorra.
