The Cider House Rules (Original Score)

CD Details

Rachel Portman composed the orchestral score for The Cider House Rules, a 1999 film adaptation of John Irving’s novel directed by Lasse Hallstrom. Set in rural Maine, the story follows a young man navigating life at an orphanage and the complexities of the people around him. Portman’s main theme, introduced on solo piano before expanding into full orchestration, evokes a pastoral quality reminiscent of Americana classical music. Throughout the score, variations of this central melody accompany the film’s emotional and dramatic moments, demonstrating the composer’s skill at weaving a cohesive musical narrative across diverse scenes.

This CD contains one disc of Portman’s complete score for the Miramax drama, released on the Masterworks label. The album features instrumental selections including Main Titles, Homer’s Lessons, The Ocean, The Cider House, and Wally Goes Off To War, among others, showcasing contemporary classical orchestration.
