Taking Chance is a 2009 HBO drama directed by Ross Katz and written by Katz and Michael Strobl, based on Strobl’s own account. Kevin Bacon stars as Lt. Col. Michael Strobl, a Marine officer stationed at Quantico who volunteers to escort the body of Lance Corporal Chance Phelps, a 20-year-old killed in Iraq, back to his hometown. Though Strobl and Phelps never served together, they shared a birthplace, and this journey across America becomes a profound meditation on military honor, sacrifice, and the quiet dignity shown by ordinary citizens toward the fallen.

This single-disc DVD release runs 77 minutes and carries a TV-PG rating from HBO. Bacon delivers a restrained performance that captures Strobl’s emotional discipline as he witnesses countless acts of respect from military personnel, airline staff, and strangers along the way. The film avoids melodrama, instead finding its power in understated moments that reveal the human cost of war. Grab this used copy and experience a story that transcends political divisions through its focus on compassion and remembrance.
