Swedish director Ingmar Bergman’s 1951 drama follows Marie, a prima ballerina whose present life takes an unexpected turn when she receives the diary of her first love, a shy student she knew years ago. As she reads his words, memories of their romance on Stockholm’s archipelago resurface, intertwining with her current existence in the shadowy world of theater. Starring Maj-Britt Nilsson and Birger Malmsten, the film explores themes of isolation, performance, and how the past refuses to remain buried, marking a creative turning point in Bergman’s artistic journey.

This is a single-disc DVD release from the Criterion Collection, with a runtime of 96 minutes and an unrated status. Bergman considered this work a bridge between his earlier films and the masterpieces that would follow, making it essential viewing for those tracing his development as a filmmaker. Owning this used copy lets you experience a formative work from one of cinema’s greatest directors at a fraction of the cost of a new release.
