About the Artist

Bankie Banx For many years, the Caribbean has enjoyed a well- deserved reputation for producing some of the finest and funkiest music. Drawing on its rich indigenous influences, CAaribbean music is instantly recoginzed and enjoyed around the world. In 1953, the tiny Caribbean island of Anguilla saw the birth of one of its finest artists, musician and songwriter, Bankie Banx. At the age of nine, Bankie created his own instrument, using plywood and copper wire to fashion his first guitar. At Fourteen, he was playingbass in a local band, covering songs from a wide variety of musicians.During the 1960’s, “the local radio station was broadcasting from a british frigate off the coast,” Banx said. “They played nothing but British Top 40, like Eric Clapton, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, and American R&B and Soul. “I really love that stuff.” This music captured Bakie’s attention and had an imense impact on him. Deeply influenced by the region’s native music as well, Bankiew has taken these influences beyond Bob Marley & Jimmy Cliff. Bankie;s notable performance included the Reggae Sunspalsh in Jamaica, jamming with Bob Dylan, touring with Jimmy Cliff, appearing in the documentry film “Cool Runnings: The Reggae Movie” and the Fox network televeision series “Key West”. He has played at numerous benefit concerts: in Miami with Paul Simon, Gloria Estafan and Jimmy Buffet for hurricane relief, and in Montserrat to raise relief fundsfor victims of the island’s volcanic eruptions. Recently, Nankie’s music has been featured in the motion picture “Southie”, winner of the Best Picture award at the Seattle Film Festival. From his first album “Roots and Herbs” released in 1978, to his ninth, “Stuck in Paradise” released in 1999, Bankie has parlayed his unique style into international acclaim. Written about in Newsweek, The Chicago Tribune, The Boston Globe, Caribbean Travel & Life and Italy’s I1 Giornale, Banx at once is an entertainer and tourist desination. In Anguilla, he can be found at The Dune Preserve, a beach bar/resturaunt built by Banx atop Anfuilla’s historical dune at Rendezvous Bay. in 1966 and again in 1999, a huricane winds destroyed The Dune. Undaunted, Bankie has rebuilt it bigger and stronger without losing any of the funk. When Bankie Performs at The Dune Preserve, he consistantly entertains a packed house of locals anf tourists alike, with a voice tjay jas been described as “Jim Morrison meets Sting”. Combining his rich, captivating baritone with a catalog of music that is a fusion of rock, jazz, reggae, and blues, Bankie creates music that is felt much as it is heard. Planet Dune, as The Dune is also knows, is where Bankie magicaly hosts Moonsplash, the annual multi-day music festival which coinsides with the first full moon of March. Moonsplash has featured The Wailers, Jon pousette-Dart, Richie Havens, Benjy Myaz, Junior Jazz, and The Bacon Brothers,as well as a variety of regional and international artists and personalities.
