Mary Chapin Carpenter released Stones In The Road in 1994 as a follow-up to her mainstream country breakthrough. Rather than embracing the new country sound, Carpenter reveals herself as an Ivy League folk rocker at heart. Her coolly delivered yet deeply felt songs explore family, community, and social injustice with thoughtfulness and restraint. The title track offers gentle midlife reflections that weave historic moments and childhood memories through its delicate verses, while “John Doe No. 24” presents a restrained and economical portrait of a blind, deaf mystery man with the detail of a short story. The album’s love songs are equally intelligent and emotionally resonant.

This CD was co-produced by Carpenter and longtime collaborator John Jennings, featuring her elegant yet earthy alto voice set against jangling guitars, rippling piano, occasional fiddle, and crisp rhythm sections that draw from the best of L.A. country rock rather than typical Nashville fare. Grab this used copy and experience a thoughtful country-folk album from the mid-1990s.
