Standing in the Shadows of Motown is a 2002 documentary directed by Paul Justman that tells the story of the Funk Brothers, the studio musicians who formed the backbone of Motown Records during its Detroit era from 1959 to 1972. Berry Gordy assembled the finest players from Detroit’s jazz and blues scene to record the label’s hits, and over fourteen years these largely anonymous musicians appeared on more Number One records than the Beach Boys, the Rolling Stones, Elvis Presley, and the Beatles combined. The film features interviews and performances from musicians including Bootsy Collins, Bob Babbitt, Jack Ashford, and others, celebrating the vital yet overlooked contributions these artists made to popular music history.

This two-disc DVD release from Artisan Entertainment runs one hour and forty-eight minutes and carries a PG rating.
