Stander is a 2003 crime drama directed by Bronwen Hughes, based on the true story of Andre Stander, a South African police captain during the Apartheid era. After witnessing and participating in brutal state repression, Stander experiences a moral reckoning that leads him to abandon his badge and pursue a career as a bank robber. Alongside two partners played by Dexter Fletcher and David O’Hara, he orchestrates a series of heists across South Africa while grappling with his conscience and his longing to reconnect with his estranged wife, portrayed by Deborah Kara Unger. Tom Jane delivers a compelling performance as the conflicted anti-hero at the film’s center.
