Sounding Point is a 2009 debut album by guitarist Julian Lage, released on EmArcy Records. At just 21 years old, Lage brings together influences spanning blues, classical, folk, and jazz into a distinctive sound that caught the attention of musical figures like Herbie Hancock and Bela Fleck. The album showcases his guitar work across a range of settings, from through-composed pieces and spontaneous improvisations in duo and trio configurations to solo performances, featuring special guests including Eigsti, Bela Fleck, and mandolinist Chris Thile of Nickel Creek and Punch Brothers. Lage interprets standards and covers including Elliott Smith’s Alameda and Neil Hefti’s Lil’ Darlin’, alongside original compositions like Clarity and All Purpose Beginning.

This CD contains ten tracks spanning roughly 40 minutes of contemporary post-bop jazz. The album opens with Clarity and closes with a rendition of Miles Davis’s All Blues. A used copy of Sounding Point offers a chance to hear an emerging guitarist’s debut at a fraction of retail cost.
