Paul Newman made his directorial debut with this 1971 drama about an Oregon logging family who refuse to join a strike, choosing instead to complete a timber shipment and defy their community. Based on Ken Kesey’s bestselling novel, the film follows Hank Stamper as he pursues profit over solidarity, creating tension with his family and neighbors. His ambition puts strain on his marriage, pits him against his half-brother, and leaves the family patriarch injured after a fatal accident on the job. The story explores themes of loyalty, sacrifice, and the cost of individual determination.

Universal Pictures released this 114-minute feature on Blu-ray as a single disc, rated PG. Directed by Paul Newman and Richard A. Colla from a screenplay by John Gay, the film features a strong ensemble cast navigating the moral complexities of labor and family obligation.
