Shine is a 1996 Australian biographical drama directed by Scott Hicks about pianist David Helfgott, played by Geoffrey Rush. As a gifted young musician, Helfgott faces constant conflict with his demanding father, Peter, portrayed by Chris Haywood. When he earns a scholarship to study music in London, his career as a concert pianist takes off. Yet the strain of his sudden success, combined with the lasting trauma of his difficult upbringing, triggers a mental health crisis that leads to years of hospitalization and struggle before he attempts to rebuild his life on stage.
