György Ligeti’s Requiem stands as a defining work of twentieth-century choral music, scored for soprano, mezzo-soprano, two mixed choirs, and orchestra. The composition moves through layers of chromatic sound, gradually ascending from lower registers toward higher pitches, transforming the work from expressions of mourning into visions of eternal light. The Kyrie section features intricate polyphonic writing that shifts from stillness into gentle motion, creating the complex micropolyphonic textures Ligeti is known for. A portion of this work gained wider recognition when Stanley Kubrick incorporated it into the monolith discovery scene in 2001: A Space Odyssey.

This 1992 recording features the Darmstadt Ensemble conducted by Brc on the German label Wergo and includes two additional Ligeti works, Aventures and Nouvelles Aventures, both celebrated theatrical choral pieces.
