Benjamin Britten’s opera The Rape of Lucretia, composed in 1946, tells the tragic story of a Roman noblewoman and the violent act that sets in motion her downfall. This 1990 recording features mezzo-soprano Dame Janet Baker alongside tenor Peter Pears, bass-baritone John Shirley-Quirk, and baritone Bryan Drake, with the English Chamber Orchestra conducted by Britten himself. Also included is Britten’s later work Phaedra, a chamber opera from 1975 that showcases Baker’s extraordinary vocal range and interpretive depth, conducted by Steuart Bedford.

This two-disc set was released by London Records and The Decca Record Company Limited, running just over two hours across both discs. The recordings capture these twentieth-century operatic works in stereo, with The Rape of Lucretia recorded in 1970 and Phaedra in 1977. Owning this used copy lets you experience these landmark performances at a fraction of the original retail cost.
