This album features soprano Galina Vishnevskaya performing vocal works by two Russian composers. Mikhail Ivanovich Glinka’s songs, written in the 1830s and 1840s, showcase the lyrical traditions of early Russian romance, while Sergei Rachmaninov’s lieder, composed between 1890 and 1912, display the rich harmonic language and emotional depth characteristic of his later period. Vishnevskaya brings her distinctive artistry to these intimate vocal pieces, accompanied by pianist Mstislav Rostropovich.

Released in 1978 on CD, this recording presents fourteen tracks spanning approximately fifty-five minutes of classical vocal music. The program includes Rachmaninov’s “Vokaliz,” a wordless song that stands as one of his most celebrated compositions, alongside settings of Russian poetry by both composers. A used copy offers the chance to explore these masterworks of the Russian vocal tradition at a fraction of retail cost.
