Queen of Katwe is a 2016 Disney drama directed by Mira Nair and based on the true story of Phiona Mutesi, a young girl living in the slums of Kampala, Uganda. When Phiona encounters Robert Katende, a former soccer player turned missionary who teaches chess to local children, her life transforms. Through the game of chess and the unwavering support of her mother Harriet and her community, Phiona discovers the confidence and determination needed to pursue her dream of becoming an international chess champion. The film stars David Oyelowo as Katende, Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o as Harriet, and newcomer Madina Nalwanga as Phiona, with a screenplay by William Wheeler adapted from Tim Crothers’ book.
