Sergei Prokofiev composed Alexander Nevsky as a cantata for mezzo-soprano, chorus, and orchestra, drawing from his film score for Sergei Eisenstein’s landmark 1938 movie about the Russian hero. The work captures the drama and grandeur of the narrative while distilling the most memorable musical material from the complete score. This album pairs it with two other orchestral suites by Prokofiev: the Scythian Suite, a bold and rhythmically inventive work, and Lieutenant Kijé, a lighter suite based on another film score. Together they showcase different facets of Prokofiev’s compositional range.

The Chicago Symphony Orchestra under conductor Claudio Abbado performs all three works on this Deutsche Grammophon release, with mezzo-soprano Elena Obraztsova as soloist in Alexander Nevsky. The album includes the complete Alexander Nevsky cantata, the Scythian Suite, and the Lieutenant Kijé suite. Acquiring this used CD gives you access to one of the finest recorded performances of these Prokofiev masterworks at a fraction of retail cost.
