Picnic is a 1955 drama directed by Joshua Logan in his feature film debut, based on William Inge’s Broadway play. Set in a small Kansas farm town on Labor Day, the story follows a charming drifter who arrives by train and reconnects with a former college classmate, setting off a chain of romantic complications and class tensions. The ensemble cast includes Kim Novak as a small-town beauty, Cliff Robertson as her wealthy fiancé, Arthur O’Connell, Betty Field, Elizabeth Wilson, and Nick Adams, among others. The film explores desire and aspiration as passions build toward a climactic Labor Day picnic.
