Movie / Show Details

Once in a Blue Moon is a fly fishing documentary directed by Carl McNeil that follows an angler’s quest across the remote and stunning landscapes of southern New Zealand. The film captures a rare natural phenomenon that occurs roughly once a decade, when an ancient beech forest’s mass flowering triggers a chain of events leading to plague-level rodent populations. As these creatures migrate across rivers and lakes, they become prey for massive brown trout that grow to extraordinary sizes, creating the ultimate fly fishing opportunity. The film documents this mysterious cycle through breathtaking cinematography and remarkable underwater sequences that reveal both the fish and the anglers pursuing them.
