Volcano Under the City is a 1974 NOVA documentary that follows a team of scientists as they descend into the active crater of Mount Nyirangongo in the Democratic Republic of Congo. With half a million people living in the shadow of this deadly mountain, volcanologist Jacques Durieux and his colleagues work to understand when and why the volcano might erupt next. Their mission becomes urgent after a 2002 eruption sent rivers of lava through the nearby city of Goma, killing around 100 people and displacing 120,000 others. The team fears that the next eruption could send lava flowing directly beneath the city streets, making their research critical to protecting lives.

This single-disc DVD release from PBS includes educational materials and activities for teachers, scene selections, closed captions, and described video for the visually impaired. The program runs in letterboxed format with Dolby stereo audio and plays in all regions. You can own this compelling science documentary on physical media at a used price.
