Notre-Dame de Paris is a 1956 French horror-drama directed by Jean Delannoy and adapted from Victor Hugo’s novel by Ben Hecht, Jacques Prevert, and Jean Aurenche. Set in 1482 Paris during the Festival of Fools, the film follows Esmeralda, a captivating gypsy dancer who performs in the square before the cathedral. From his tower, the obsessed alchemist Frollo watches her with dark desire and commands Quasimodo, the cathedral’s deformed bell ringer, to abduct her. When the disfigured servant comes face to face with the beautiful dancer, unexpected feelings emerge that complicate Frollo’s sinister plans. The cast includes Gina Lollobrigida as Esmeralda, Anthony Quinn as Quasimodo, and Alain Cuny as Frollo.
