Neil Diamond recorded these pop and rock songs during the mid-1960s for producer Bert Berns’ Bang label, a period when the New York-based songwriter was establishing himself as an emerging pop star. Working with producers Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich, Diamond crafted memorable singles like “Solitary Man,” “Cherry Cherry,” and “Thank the Lord for the Night Time” that kept rock music on the charts during the British Invasion. Several of these tracks later became hits for other artists, including “I’m a Believer” by the Monkees and “Kentucky Woman” by Deep Purple, though many consider Diamond’s original versions to be definitive.
