CD Details
Charles Mingus composed music for the 1965 Monterey Jazz Festival but had limited time to perform it there, so he recorded this material in its entirety at UCLA on September 25, 1965 with an octet featuring tuba, French horn, three trumpets including Sun Ra veteran Hobart Dotson, and alto saxophonist Charles McPherson. The post-bop session captures Mingus leading his band through spiritual meditations, angular bebop arrangements, and extended compositions while interjecting speeches and instructions, creating a document that blends earthiness and tunefulness with the spirit of free jazz and political consciousness.
Originally released in extremely limited quantities as a self-issued double album and later reissued on vinyl in 1984, this two-disc CD comes from Sue Mingus’s label and includes false starts, asides, and the full performance exactly as it happened. You can own this rare Mingus session on physical media without the collector’s markup.
