Rob Reiner directed this 1990 psychological thriller based on Stephen King’s novel and adapted by William Goldman. James Caan stars as a bestselling author who crashes his car in a remote, snow-covered area and is found by Annie Wilkes, played by Kathy Bates. What begins as a rescue turns sinister when Wilkes discovers that Caan’s character killed off her favorite protagonist in his latest manuscript. Held captive in her isolated home, injured and cut off from the outside world, Caan must engage in an escalating battle of wits against his increasingly unstable captor, who forces him to resurrect the dead character while destroying everything else he has written.
