CD Details
Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 2, known as the Resurrection Symphony, premiered in 1888 and stands as one of classical music’s most ambitious works. Leonard Bernstein conducts the New York Philharmonic through this five-movement masterpiece, which builds from a solemn funeral march through introspective passages and a powerful scherzo before culminating in a transcendent finale. Bernstein’s interpretation favors deliberate tempos that allow the music’s inherent drama to unfold with tremendous force, creating climaxes of overwhelming intensity.
This CD release captures the New York Philharmonic’s live performances under Bernstein, presenting the complete symphony across five movements: the opening Allegro Maestoso (Totenfeier), the Andante Moderato, the Scherzo, the Urlicht movement, and the final Im Tempo Des Scherzos.
