Woody Allen directs and stars in this 1975 historical comedy set during the Napoleonic Wars in czarist Russia. Allen plays Boris Grushenko, a neurotic scholar more interested in philosophy than military service, who falls for the spirited Sonja, played by Diane Keaton. When Sonja becomes engaged to an unappealing suitor, Boris enlists in the army hoping to win her heart, only to return home broke despite his newfound heroic reputation. The two eventually marry and settle into an unconventional life together, but when French forces threaten Russia, Sonja convinces Boris to join her in a dangerous plot to eliminate Napoleon.
