Looking for America is a 2003 contemporary jazz album by The Carla Bley Big Band, released on ECM Records. Carla Bley, who has spent over four decades developing her distinctive approach to jazz composition, leads an 18-piece ensemble featuring 13 horns, two keyboards, and a rhythm section. Drawing on her long collaborations with these musicians, Bley writes and arranges with their individual voices in mind. The album explores North American themes, referencing Mexico and Canada while revisiting ideas she has explored before, such as reimagined patriotic songs. Bley’s arrangements showcase her gift for taking familiar musical ideas and transforming them into something entirely her own.

This one-disc CD contains nine tracks including “Grand Mother,” the 21-minute centerpiece “The National Anthem,” “Los Cocineros,” “Tijuana Traffic,” and “Old MacDonald Had A Farm,” running just over an hour in total. Owning this used copy means you get Bley’s orchestral big band vision at a fraction of retail cost.
