When Mary begins losing her vision, her father Charles struggles to accept the diagnosis and share the difficult news with her. After Mary goes blind, her parents decide she should attend a special school in Iowa, where she meets teacher Adam Kendall and discovers a new sense of purpose, eventually becoming an accomplished student and instructor herself.
