Argentine saxophonist Leandro “Gato” Barbieri recorded this album in 1997, drawing from his celebrated work in Latin jazz during the 1970s. Latino America brings together material from Barbieri’s early Impulse Records sessions, capturing his explorations across South America where he collaborated with local musicians in Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro. Blending his post-Coltrane saxophone approach with Latin American folk traditions and indigenous instruments, Barbieri and his ensembles navigate Argentine folklore, tango, and Brazilian samba with striking intensity and clarity.
