Lady Sings the Blues is a 1972 biographical drama directed by Sidney J. Furie that follows the life of legendary blues singer Billie Holiday. Diana Ross makes her film debut in the lead role, delivering a powerful performance as the iconic “Lady Day.” The film chronicles Holiday’s ascent to stardom, her complicated relationship with manager Louis McKay (played by Billy Dee Williams), and her personal battles with addiction. Isabel Sanford, James T. Callahan, Milton Selzer, and Ned Glass round out the supporting cast in this intimate portrait of one of America’s most influential musicians.

This is a single-disc DVD release from Paramount Pictures with a runtime of two hours and twenty-four minutes and carries an R rating. The film features many of Billie Holiday’s most celebrated songs throughout its narrative. Earning five Academy Award nominations including a Best Actress nod for Ross, this drama remains a striking achievement in music biography filmmaking.
