Director James Lapine’s 1991 romantic comedy-drama follows the unconventional relationship between the audacious 19th-century writer George Sand and the reserved composer Frédéric Chopin in 1830s Paris. Judy Davis stars as the bold, controversial Sand, a woman who defies social convention by dressing in men’s clothing and living life on her own terms. Hugh Grant portrays Chopin, the talented but emotionally guarded musician whose delicate nature contrasts sharply with Sand’s uninhibited personality. When Sand hears Chopin’s exquisite music, she becomes determined to win his heart, setting in motion a passionate and complicated romance between two artistic souls from vastly different worlds.
