Anthony Holborne’s Renaissance instrumental works come to life on this 1997 recording led by lutenist Jacob Heringman. The program explores music written for lute, cittern, and bandora, three plucked string instruments central to 16th-century court and chamber music. Pieces like Galliard: Holburns Passion and Pavan: Posthuma showcase Holborne’s gift for melody and dance rhythms, while shorter works such as A French Toy and Sicke Sicke And Very Sicke reveal the wit and variety of the period.

This single CD on the ASV Gaudeamus label captures the delicate textures and ornamentation of Renaissance plucked-string music. Acquire this used copy and explore an often-overlooked corner of early music history.
