David Cronenberg directs this 2005 crime thriller about Tom Stall, a mild-mannered diner owner in rural Indiana whose act of self-defense against two would-be robbers sets off a chain reaction of violence and danger. When his heroic moment draws unwanted attention from criminals from his past, Tom’s loving wife and two children discover shocking truths about who he really is. As a scarred villain and other dangerous figures emerge from Tom’s history, the film becomes a dark exploration of human nature and survival instinct, adapted from a graphic novel by John Wagner and Vince Locke.
