James Stewart stars as Elwood P. Dowd in this 1950 Universal comedy-fantasy directed by Henry Koster. Based on Mary Chase’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play, the film follows the gentle and good-natured Elwood, whose best friend is Harvey, an invisible six-foot-tall rabbit that only he can see. When Elwood’s sister Veta Louise grows tired of his obsession with Harvey and attempts to have him committed to a mental hospital, a series of hilarious mix-ups ensue, landing Veta Louise in the institution instead. With his kindly philosophy and the help of his imaginary companion, Elwood works to resolve the chaos, ultimately leading to family reconciliation and unexpected romance.
