D.W. Griffith, the pioneering silent-film director, made only two sound features, both presented here. Abraham Lincoln (1930) stars Walter Huston as the 16th president, exploring his personal sorrows alongside his historic achievements with sensitivity and depth. The Struggle (1931) shifts to an intimate portrait of an ordinary American man whose life unravels through alcoholism, culminating in a harrowing sequence where the protagonist, consumed by delirium, turns violent toward his own daughter in their deteriorated home.

This single-disc DVD collection runs three hours and six minutes of black-and-white drama from Kino. Both films have been restored in HD from 35mm archive materials. Owning these restored Griffith talkies on physical media lets you experience cinema history at a fraction of retail cost.
