CD Details
Fractious Fingering: Early Years 3 is a 1997 CD reissue of swing jazz recordings by Fats Waller and His Rhythm, capturing performances from a prolific eight-month stretch in 1936. Waller’s virtuosic stride piano and distinctive vocal delivery anchor tracks like “Christopher Columbus,” “Cabin in the Sky,” and “All of My Life,” supported by his regular ensemble including trumpeter Herman Autrey, clarinetist and tenor saxophonist Gene Sedric, guitarist Al Casey, and bassist Charles Turner. The collection showcases Waller’s gift for reimagining standards with wit and spontaneity, while moments like the celesta-driven intro to “Cabin in the Sky” reveal the tenderness beneath his comic style.
This two-disc set contains 41 tracks from RCA recordings, spanning instrumental sessions and vocal performances that demonstrate Waller’s consistent brilliance across the period. You can own this piece of jazz history on used CD without the new retail price.
