A Guy Called Gerald released Essence in 2000, five years after his previous album. This electronic work takes a more introspective approach than his earlier material, blending drum and bass with dub influences while maintaining soulful melodies. Gerald assembled a roster of guest vocalists to bring depth to his instrumental foundation, including Louise Rhodes from Lamb, Lady Miss Kier, his brother David Simpson, and Welsh singer-songwriter Wendy Page. The album moves through themes of existence and human connection, from opening instrumental passages through vocal-driven explorations of emotion and experience.

This CD contains eleven tracks with a total runtime of approximately 48 minutes. The production merges ambient textures with rhythmic complexity, creating a sound that aims to refresh the drum and bass genre with melodic sophistication. Notable tracks include “The First Breath,” “Humanity,” “Fever (Or A Flame),” “Beaches & Deserts,” and “Final Call.” You can own this used copy of Essence at a fraction of what you would pay for a new one.
