Jean Gremillon directed these three French dramas during the Nazi occupation and its aftermath. Remorques (1941) follows a tugboat captain played by Jean Gabin whose marriage faces strain when he encounters an alluring woman during a dangerous sea rescue, with Jacques Prévert contributing to the screenplay. Lumière d’été (1946) unfolds at a remote mountain hotel in Provence, weaving together the complicated romantic entanglements of an artist, hotel manager, and dam worker in a tragicomic portrait of excess and desire. Le ciel est à vous (1944) centers on a wife who pursues her own ambitions in this romantic drama. All three films explore themes of love, duty, and human resilience against the backdrop of wartime France.

This Criterion Collection release presents all three films on one DVD with a combined runtime of five hours and seven minutes. The black-and-white presentations are in French with English subtitles. You can own these essential works of French cinema on physical media at a used price.
