District 9 is a 2009 science fiction thriller directed by Neill Blomkamp and written by Blomkamp and Terri Tatchell. Set in Johannesburg, South Africa, the film follows a government bureaucrat named Wikus who becomes accidentally exposed to an alien substance that begins transforming him into one of the extraterrestrials. For years, aliens have occupied a segregated shantytown called District 9, initially welcomed but now confined to blighted conditions and exploited by a for-profit corporation. As Wikus metamorphoses, he flees from scientists seeking to harvest his evolving biology and from the aliens themselves, who view him as a threat. His survival depends on an unlikely alliance with an extraterrestrial planning an escape from Earth.
