Deep Purple’s self-titled debut arrived in 1968 as a late-’60s rock effort featuring original vocalist Rod Evans and bassist Nick Simper alongside guitarist Ritchie Blackmore. The album showcases Blackmore’s skilled guitar work throughout a collection that hints at the hard rock direction the band would soon pursue, though it remains rooted in the psychedelic and blues-influenced rock of its era. A standout is their rendition of Donovan’s “Lalena,” which became one of their best-known early recordings.

This 2011 CD reissue includes the original album tracks plus five bonus recordings, among them an alternate version of “The Bird Has Flown” and the studio B-side “Emmaretta.” The disc comes from a used collection and offers a chance to hear Deep Purple’s formative sound at a fraction of the cost of a new copy.
